Day 1: Mondays – July 15 & Aug. 5
Educational Portion
Only Rain Down the Stormdrain (Intro. to Water: Importance of water, challenges facing water focusing on stormwater runoff)
Field Trip Portion
Storm drain marking (help from Friends of the Mississippi River)
Day 2: Tuesdays – July 16 & Aug. 6
Educational Portion
Native Plants are Great for Rain Gardens and Pollinators
Action/Field Trip Portion
We will investigate and help take care of nearby rain gardens.
Day 3: Wednesdays – July 17 & Aug. 7
Educational Portion
Is it soaking in? Looking at the importance of infiltration. Perform skit about water cycle interruption.
Action/Field Trip Portion
Field trip to see Capitol Region Watershed District’s infiltration practices around town.
Day 4: Thursdays – July 18 & Aug. 8
Educational Portion
Water Conservation Might Start with Energy Conservation? A look at how water is used in our country, in our community, and in our homes and around the world. What can we do to conserve water?
Action/Field Trip Portion
Field trip to solar garden (coal-burning and nuclear power plants account for largest groundwater water withdrawals. Burning coal is also largely responsible for mercury in lakes that is found in ~1/3 of waters on “impaired waters” list.
Day 5: Fridays – July 19 & Aug. 9
Educational Portion
Water Hero Celebration. What do clean water actions look like? How are kids going to commit to be water heroes even when no one is looking? What was learned? What do students still want to learn? …
Action/Field Trip Portion
Visit local community gardens. LUNCH provided! About 1/3 of our country’s water is used in food production. How does eating locally cut down on air and water pollution?
